Hair Botox Treatment: My Experience

Hair Botox Treatment

Who doesn’t want great, manageable and silky hair. Hair Botox treatment is one such thing that promises all of these. And now after getting it done twice on my hair, I am in position to share about the experience and to recommend or not recommend it.

Let’s first understand in brief what is Hair Botox treatment (without going into any technical details). Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin that is injected in skin (yes, in skin, not hair) to smoothen out the wrinkles by blocking nerve signals.

Now, hair botox is a hair treatment that has nothing to do with botox or botulinum toxin. Hair botox is a deep conditioning hair treatment in which the hair strands are coated with a protein based filler to improve hair volume, texture, and make them smoother and shinier. Since all these effects are similar to the effects achieved for skin using skin botox (botulinum toxin), this hair treatment was also named as botox…. The Hair Botox.

How is Hair Botox treatment different from other hair treatments

Hair Botox treatment does not involve any structural modification of hair, whereas other hair treatments like keratin treatment and hair smoothening use chemicals like formaldehyde to break and reform the structural bonds to achieve straight hair. In that sense, hair botox is milder and does not use chemicals as harsh as formaldehyde.

A little background of my hair

I am blessed with good hair. Although, due to lifestyle and pollution, they are not that good anymore. If I take care of them well, use home remedies, hair masks etc., they still behave good. However, if I don’t take extra care, they tend to become frizzy and rough. Other than hair botox, I have never ever done any treatment on my hair, not even hair color.

P.S. the pictures here are around 5 years old, and these are my natural hair. So you see, I naturally have good hair.

My Experience with Hair Botox

I got the Hair Botox done for the first time in April 2023, for my sister’s wedding. It was just 2 months after the birth of my second child. After a very complicated pregnancy and hence zero hair care for months, my hair were not in a very good condition. Then my only sibling was getting married, so I had to look good, and I needed a quick fix. After reading and asking experts about hair botox treatment, I decided to go for it. And I am glad I did.

I got it done the second time just a few days ago, that is, March 2025. Why? Because I didn’t do any hair care in winter, holi colors left my hair dry, and I again longed for smooth frizz free hair without many efforts.

Process

So, let me first tell you the process. The process of Hair Botox treatment starts with hair wash. The stylist washes the hair at least thrice to ensure there is no oil, dirt or any product build up on hair. Then the hair botox product is applied on the hair by taking very small sections of hair. The product is applied on thin sections and rubbed properly. Then the product is left on the hair for 40-60 minutes. Afterwards, a hair straightener is used on the hair to let the product penetrate the hair. And this step is a difficult one, because the product evaporates due to the heat and the vapors are very suffocating. The smell is very pungent and bothering. Even the throat feels like being choked at times. With this, the process for the day is done.

First time, I was asked to wash the hair at home after 2 days, while the second time, I was called back to the salon after 2 days. The hair were again pressed using the straightener and then washed at the salon itself.

Longevity of Hair Botox

Hair botox treatment is a washable treatment, that means, every time you wash your hair, the product layer on the hair strands depletes and the effect reduces. On an average, the effect lasts from 3-5 months, depending how well you take care of your hair and how frequently you shampoo your hair. The hair is to be washed with only sulphate free shampoo.

I usually shampoo once a week, so my treatment lasted for about 6 months. And then too the hair did not drastically return to the original state; it was a gradual process. So, I can say that I enjoyed better hair for almost an year.

What effects on hair can be expected?

Hair become smoother, straighter; frizz is reduced. They look healthier.

Does Hair Botox treatment straighten the hair?

No. The Hair Botox treatment makes your hair close to how your hair naturally are. My hair are naturally straight; they have become wavy due the way I keep them tied up in a bun. But since they are naturally straight, hair botox have made my hair considerably straighter. It also depends on the brand of the product used and the competence of the stylist. Generally, you can expect 20-40 percent straightening.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the salon and the length of your hair. I paid rs. 6000 the first time that included sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, MRP of which was rs. 1500 each. I was not given an option of not taking the shampoo and conditioner. Second time, I paid rs. 3500 and it did not include shampoo conditioner. I can easily get the products outside within rs. 1000, so that way, the second time was cheaper.

Does it increase the hair fall?

No. It actually decreases the hair fall since the frizz reduces and thus hair do not tangle as much as they did before, resulting in less hair fall. Although yes, the hair fall happens at the time of treatment, as they use hair straightener that involves heat and pulling of hair.

Are there any side effects after the hair get back to normal?

Not at all.

Does this have different brands?

Yes. I got ‘Moira’ the first time and ‘Keratine’ the second time (Keratine brand, not the keratin treatment).

Do I recommend this?

I recommend Hair Botox to those who have rough, dry and frizzy hair, or someone who wants sleek hair for some special occasion. For those who naturally have good hair, I suggest managing your hair using natural remedies. There are many natural agents and simple remedies that work wonders for your hair.
